Fashion. It’s the topic that rarely strays from a 24 year old woman’s mind.

Let’s take a step back. It rarely strays from any woman’s mind, at least not for long. I can’t be the only one that instead of rolling over to say good morning to her boyfriend, immediately opens her phone to check what is under Revolve’s “New Today” page or to check what has been posted on the Business of Fashion Instagram. For a topic that is so often thought about, it has always felt fleeting in every possible way. It starts at a young age. Your first day of middle school, maybe. The stress, anxiety, and discomfort of growing up hits at some point and for some reason many girls think to themselves

“Hmmm... the perfect outfit will fix this!”. The instinct to fix the unease with the perfect outfit doesn’t fade, it just changes uniforms – fast forward to the corporate world. By now it is just a habit to think that the outcome depends on the outfit. Putting all of your knowledge you’ve acquired from the past 4+ years to the test is definitely fully reliant on you finding the perfect black kitten heel for your first day. And don’t get me started on the trends. You’re telling me my Sperry boat shoes my mom finally convinced me to donate last summer are coming back? The trends are impossible to keep up with as the speed and cost of fashion increases and circles back around. Let’s isolate a specific trend. The capsule wardrobe. While it seems like a great idea in theory, I personally battle with it because it could take away the creativity and fun out of fashion. Most of the capsule wardrobes I see definitely don’t have the beautiful, fun chocolate brown fur coat my roommate just bought from Zara. It also isn’t as easy as people think. There’s that dangling carrot again.

Building a capsule wardrobe can cost hundreds of dollars if you really want quality pieces. It makes sense why no one my age is buying houses...Trends aside, the thought of trying to pursue my dream and start a career within the fashion world is daunting. As someone who has always been considered more analytical, good with numbers, detail oriented, etc. shopping and fashion have proved to be my favorite outlet. Years later, as I find myself in a public accounting job (yuck), and I wonder every day why I never had the guts to go for what I was truly interested in. Maybe it’s because every job offer I see is in NYC, LA, or somewhere called Cerritos, CA (@Revolve please come to Dallas I’m begging).Or maybe it is because it feels impossible to break into the countless tiers of cake that I picture when I think about working in the fashion industry. For now, the carrot continues to be out of reach. While I wait patiently for the right opportunity to come along, I spend my time on apps like Rodeo, Pinterest, and Locker, where I daydream about how to take a bite of the dream that is right in front of me.

On the Friday of Fashion Week, I opened my phone to find that the new King Princess album had dropped. I listened on the subway as I observed my fellow commuters. I wondered which strangers were FIT students on their way to some unpaid, fashion related internship - ready to topple over with garment bags and Miranda Priestly style commands just for a measly line on their resume. Who would emerge that very evening from a cocoon of glam like a runway ready butterfly, mewing for flash photos and (I imagine) describing some show as ‘truly inspired’. I should clarify that the Friday of Fashion Week is actually day two of the official event, because NYFW runs from Thursday to Tuesday. Why? Because they can! “It’s chic!” the fashion gods whisper while scoffing at our 9-5, Monday through Friday work weeks.

My friends and I debriefed the KP album as the morning went on. “It makes me want to chug a beer and stand on a table in the dead of winter” my friend (special mention Teddy Staley) said. “It’s like...angsty cozy?”

That feeling stuck with me all morning as I mentally rehashed the show from the night before (read: tried to curate an instagram post from the night before). I had attended Contessa Mills s2026 presentation in a Tribeca loft. Models stood on whimsically lush platforms as guests meandered through the Manhattan high-rise adorned with crystals, draped garments, and what I believe was multiple severed animal claws.

Again, the angsty cozy moniker rang true. The collection has a touch of darkness to it. An angsty artistry, that almost sets you on edge with the devilish world it introduces through the shifting of fabric and intimately placed beading. Like Wednesday Addams at a burlesque show. But there’s also something cozy about it. Bustiers reminiscent of pieces some of our great great grandmothers would have worn, silhouettes that remind me of 1950 pin ups. It feels cozy because it’s tinged with familiarity, timeless in its inspiration, but also just because it’s beautiful.

It’s easy to reduce Fashion Week to a playground of consumerism, where socialites and influencers attend sceney soirees just for the photo ops. But I thought about how an album, serendipitously released the next day, made me feel the same way as a show. Fashion is art; it’s identity flipped inside out. It guides so much of how we move through the world, so intertwined with music and every other way we express ourselves. Fashion Week, despite whatever pitfalls can be ascribed to it, is another way the physical representation of feelings - some we didn’t even know existed - can be brought into our lives. And that’s really why we need art.

Inside my First Fashion Week: Real Moments, Real People, Real Style New York Fashion Week has always felt like this untouchable world reserved for editors, celebrities, and the front-row crowd of head-to-toe designer. But once I experienced it for myself, I realized there’s so much more happening beyond the runway. Between brand pop-ups, meeting creators I’ve followed forever, and even people-watching on the streets, NYFW turned out to be this mix of glamour,creativity, and surprising accessibility.

Keep reading for the influencers I connected with, the trends I kept turning my head for, and the little moments that made Fashion Week feel just as real as it was magical. I kicked off Fashion Week at a Shop Pickle panel with Hannah Lizzy and Danielle Carolan. It was a ticketed event, but I used it as a chance to network—and it paid off. Danielle was so warm and sweet (we bonded over our shared experience of going to SEC schools.) Later that night, I had one of those full-circle moments: after months of emailing Danielle and Alix’s (celebrity stylists) team, I finally got to meet Danielle in person. We had an incredible conversation, and she even shared her contact with me. The event was so insightful, and I left feeling inspired from all of the strong and fierce women on the panel.

The next day, I headed to the Anine Bing preview—DJ, champagne, shopping, and a quick chat with Anine herself! I also made time for the Vivrelle pop-up to check out their new designer bags. These events felt intimate and excited, they reminded me that Fashion Week is just as much about building connections as it is about clothes. One of the most striking trends from this season wasn’t just about the clothes—it was about presence. The “cool girl” look dominated, defined less by perfection and more by confidence. Oversized blazers, capri pants, and socks with heels carried that sharp.

All-American edge, but the undone hair and effortless styling kept it grounded. It felt like a rejection to trying too hard—power dressing reimagined for women who already own their authority. A few months ago, I was just a girl from the south dreaming about being in the same room as these people.

And now? I was there. If there’s one thing Fashion Week taught me, it’s that so much of it is accessible if you just ask. Push yourself into these spaces—you deserve to be there.

Say hi, meet friends, ask questions, and soak it all in. The beauty of fashion is that we’re all creating, experimenting, and figuring it out together. That’s what makes it magic.

Recently, I have been getting so many TikToks on my “For You Page” where girls go and get their “colors done” or “matched” to their skin tone. While it’s not the most exciting aspect of fashion, a basic understanding of color theory provides the foundation to “color match” oneself.

Let me explain…

Color theory is the study of how colors interact with each other and the visual effects they produce when combined. By understanding and interpreting color theory, you can discover various ways to accentuate your personality and physical features, while also being able to interpret others’ characteristics based on their colors.

Critical Concepts of Color Theory:

1. The Color Wheel

   • Primary Colors: Blue, red, and yellow are the primary colors that cannot be created by mixing other colors.

   • Secondary Colors: Green, orange, and purple are formed by mixing two primary colors.

   • Tertiary Colors: These are created by mixing a primary color with a secondary color, such as red-orange or blue-green.

   2. Color Relationships

   • Complementary Colors: Colors opposite each other on the color wheel (e.g., red and green).
